Well, I've moved house with my Mum and Dad to the bustling city of Conneaut from Black Lemon, and im 23 years old! We live in Black Lemon during the depression but my Dad got an opportunity to take a job here in Conneaut and we decided to leave. My young brother, Ian, is in Black Island's Youth Team, his a Goalkeeper unlike myself, a Midfielder. I have always wanted to play in the SCSL but have been shot down with the only chance i got and now i work at a shop that sells Sports Equipment in Conneaut.
I finished University at the same time that Conneaut was in the Season I Championship Game against Smurf City. I was even in a near by bar with Spartans fans who couldn't get into the ground. We all got a bit tipsy and we celebrated the night away when the Spartans slammed home that final and elusive penalty. Although I loved soccer i have never supported a team due to the lack of a team in Black Lemon but from that night on I have been a seasoned Spartans fan.
Season II saw the 2 Divisions of 8 and we were put into the top division, the Major League... something I knew was a bad idea from the start. We finished last in the league with a dismal 3 wins from the 14 starts we made. My support for the Spartans waivered and what with the whole Hilton affair I started to go off of Soccer completely. Season III i was in the freezing temperatures of Caron up North trying to break into a Youth Team like Ian. I checked Spartans results as often as I could but I was on very limited money and I could only afford an hour at the Net Cafe a fortnight.
When Caron won the first Youth League I felt like i had achieved something despite not actually making the team. My try-outs were very successful but Chargers coaches turned to me and told me they were looking for a very young squad for Season IV and I was a bit too old. Ian and my parents urged me to try another club but i decided to take a job working with Sports Equipment back in Black Lemon. When my dad lost his job as Project Manager at TransLemon we were now living off of a mortgage, thinks didn't look up, except for Ian who was on the other side of SimNation in Black Island.
My Dad eventually got a job in Conneaut managing the construction of some Skyscrapers in the heart of Conneaut while I got transferred to another shop within the Franchise that sells the Sports Equipment.
Season IV has started as poorly as I thought it would. The opening 4 rounds saw us with 3 losses and just a solitary 1-0 win over fellow basement dwellers Snowflake City our only points of the season. During Round 5 we were unpacking and I had to wait for a day after the game to get the result when my Dad finally decided to set up the Computer!
Today the Spartans were playing the once Dreded Black Island, who like the Spartans were once a force to be reckoned with. Unlike the Spartans fans, the Mercs fans still think they are!
My Brothers Youth Team defeated the Spartans youth 1-0 yesterday, I show a little disappointment but also show happiness that my Brother is doing so well at the Mercs. Anyhoo, he sent me a ticket to see the two teams clash this afternoon and I can't thank him enough, my first time I actually get to see them in person.
I arrived 20 minutes early and made sure I bought a program before I went in. The Spartans looked good on paper and I felt we were in with a chance against Black Island. I found my seat amongst the Spartans faithful who were already chanting away. The Pre-game entertainment finished and on ran the players from the tunnel. Black Island in their Black and White stripped shirts with Black shorts and The Spartans in their Maroon, Dark Blue and Cream kits. The sun beat down on the players and right into the Black Island fans that had made the long trek on the side of the stadium.
This was always going to be a harsh match for both sides and our star forward D. Wiltshire was hacked down early on from one of the Islanders and the Ref sure heard about it from the Spartans faithful when he let the defender off with a warning!
The game seesawed back a forth for the first 20 minutes with both teams have a few chances to take the lead. The shadow cast over the whole of the penalty area on the right and it made the rest of the pitch look gorgeous. I was amazed at how active the crowd was as the game continued to get more and more exciting.
Then it happened. I. Christie smashed home the ball from 30 yards out in the shadows for Black Island and gave them the lead. All the chanting by the fans around me stopped and everyone began to think what could have been. A few Mercs players joined Christie in celebrations but the crowd was deadly silent except for the few hundred Mercs fans across the field from us.
Before we could even contemplate what had just happened we were back level with the trophyless Mercs. D. Wiltshire hit a shot which got deflected out for a corner. C. Tate swung it in and up popped no other then D. Wiltshire to head past the diving keeper and level the scores at 1-1. The crowd went wild and I was starting to think of the Championship Game I all over again.
Unfortunately though, the level scores last barely a minute later as I. Christie scored his second from a brilliant free kick set-up play. I think our players were still celebrating in their minds when it happened.
We had a few chances to find an equaliser but it wasn’t to be and the final whistle went and we finished with another heart breaking loss. We shared equal possession and had almost the same amount of chances to find an equaliser but it wasn’t to be. The Championship Game victory seems a VERY long time ago now as we look set to face another heartbreaking season in the bottom of our Division.
I came home in the Bus with other Spartans fans which was eerily quiet. I know Ian will have left a message for me when I get home, im sure he watched it on TV. We are one third of the way through the season and I can already tell this is going to be a long season for the Spartans and their fans.
